Spider-Man 2 – The Best Skills and Abilities to Unlock in the Shortest Time. The best order to upgrade everything in the new PS5 open-world blockbuster
Spider-Man 2 features two superheroes this time instead of one, and as a result there's a lot more to upgrade. Whether you're playing as Peter Parker or Miles Morales, here are all the abilities, skills, and costume powers you should focus on strengthening first.
Although you can switch between Peter and Miles at any time while you're netting around New York, certain missions and side events will require you to play as one or the other. As a result, the heroes share some skill tree upgrades and abilities, while others are entirely unique to Peter or Miles. As you explore, prevent crimes, and complete missions, you'll level up and earn coins and skill points. Read on for a quick rundown of the different upgrade paths and our thoughts on which ones are worth prioritizing to get the most out of Spider-Man 2.
Invest in the common Spider-Man skill tree first
The shared skill tree gives benefits to both Peter and Miles, giving you more bang for your buck with each skill point. More importantly, the skills in the shared tree are more fundamental to the core gameplay, with net-singing upgrades, combat maneuvers, and other bonuses that make you stronger while also making the game more fun.
After obtaining the Slingshot Throw, collect points in the middle and right parts of the skill tree. Loop De Loop and Corner Tether are a blast to use and will help you move around the city much faster. Combo Resupply and Perfect Dodge Recharge give you more uptime for tools and abilities, allowing you to be more lethal in fights and unlock your toolbox more often.
Web Whip and Web Throw, on the left side of the skill tree, allow you to incapacitate enemies and toss them around when they're wrapped in webs. However, my favorite ability on the left side is Wall Thrash, which allows you to beat enemies with kicks like Chun-Li when cornered. Meanwhile, if you want to do tons of cool-looking takedowns, Fired Up gives Spider-Man more Focus the higher your combo. It's the stylish way to take down enemy mobs quickly and look super cool while doing it.
What to upgrade in Miles Morales' skill tree
While Peter is a little more prominent in Spider-Man 2's biggest missions and fights, Miles' powers are a lot more fun. Poison charged electric attacks shoot lightning everywhere and are great for crowd control. With that in mind, it's worth picking up Venom Jump and Venom Jump: Mastery first, and then moving on to Chain Lightning: Overwhelming Power (increases lightning bolts from three to six) and Reverse Flux: Empower (produces additional lightning bolts).
After all that, the right side of the tree contains all of Miles' upgrades for his Venom Blast ultimate attack. The large explosive lightning ball hits anyone nearby and can clear encounters single-handedly, so it's worth throwing everything else in there. Even the resulting mid-battle photo ops are worth it.
What to upgrade in Peter Parker's skill tree
Peter has the advantage of having Venom abilities, but he has the disadvantage of being stuck with just Spider Arm attacks, which are often much more targeted and don't always feel rewarding to use. My advice is to hold off on making any significant Peter upgrades until the Venom side of the skill tree is unlocked.
From there, you'll want to work your way down the left side of the tree, picking up Symbiote Strike: Extended, Symbiote Echo: Extended, and Ripple: Don't Resist. The goal is to achieve Surge: the Power Spike, which makes Peter's Surge ultimate attack with Venom (think Kratos' rage mode in God of War) last much longer. When active, Peter can take down regular enemies very quickly, one after the other, and deal much more damage to bosses with just his standard punch combination.
The best order to upgrade Spider-Man's costume
The good news is that Peter and Miles share the same outfit upgrades. The bad news is, this all costs a lot of coins earned from Photo Ops, Hunter Stash, Mysteries, and other open world activities. It will take you a while to max out the entire tree, but it's worth focusing on health and damage in the beginning.
Trust Boost, the third node in the health tree, heals you every time you make a perfect escape. Air Marshal in the damage tree will make mid air attacks more powerful, which is very useful since you'll be spending a lot of time punching enemies into the air during fights so you can finish them off without getting mobbed from behind.
It's worth upgrading each area—health, damage, focus, traversal—a few times, as you'll likely have the corresponding tokens for some of the later upgrades that require you to complete many more activities of the open world. What happens next depends on whether there is a particular area you are struggling with. Are you dying a lot? Get more health. Does it take forever to finish fights? Increase your damage.
However, if things are generally going well, you should finish the migration tree first. Spider-Man 2 feels best when he's swinging around or flying with his wingsuit. You also spend most of the game doing this. Having all the web-slinging upgrades will make exploring New York faster and more fun, which is, after all, the whole point of the game.
