According to Bethesda Game Studios' new statement, Starfield, which reached 7 million players as of September 6, has now exceeded 10 million players. Launching with 6 million players, Starfield was already the “biggest launch” in Bethesda history, and now it's gotten even bigger.
10 million certainly sounds like a big number, but Bethesda and Microsoft never said what their expectations were for the game in terms of players or timelines. Plus, given Game Pass' paradigm, there's no good way to compare it to past Bethesda game launches. Bethesda didn't say how many copies of Starfield have been sold or how many people are playing the game as part of a Game Pass membership.
Whatever the reason, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said Starfield will definitely make money.
Starfield is an Xbox exclusive on console, meaning potentially millions in lost sales. Xbox finance boss Tim Stuart testified during the FTC hearing that the Starfield project is expected to sell 10 million copies on PlayStation. He said Starfield could help offset losses by increasing Game Pass subscribers and console sales.
Starfield will grow over time with a story expansion called Shattered Space and other ongoing updates, among other things like DLSS support and the addition of a FOV slider. Built for Starfield modding support Coming in 2024.
News of Starfield passing a new gaming milestone follows the massive Xbox document leak in the same week, which revealed a host of information about Microsoft's potential future plans. The leak, as it turned out, was Microsoft's own fault.
