The two companies announced on Monday that Take-Two has officially completed its $12,7 billion deal for social game developer Zynga. With the purchase, Take-Two not only takes ownership of major Zynga franchises like FarmVille, but also gives access to Zynga's hugely popular, free-to-play mobile game development capability.
Many major game studios have invested heavily in mobile devices, and some of the games have proven to be great sources of income. For example, Activision's Call of Duty: Mobile, which launched in October 2019, has recently earned more than $1,5 billion, according to Sensor Tower. And in November, Sensor Tower said that Krafton's PUBG Mobile had a dazzling $7 billion in revenue. (Tencent, meanwhile, is significantly involved in the development of these two games.)
Take-Two, which owns big games like Grand Theft Auto, BioShock, and Civilization, probably wants to enter the mobile gaming world with the help of Zynga, and the company said it plans to bring in more franchises during an investor presentation during the deal.
News of Take-Two's acquisition of Zynga in January was hailed as one of the largest acquisitions in video game history, but just over a week later, Microsoft has significantly raised the bar by announcing its $68.7 billion deal for Activision Blizzard. Later that month, Sony said it would buy Destiny developer Bungie in a $3.6 billion deal.
