Microsoft Gaming is reportedly working on an all-digital Xbox Series X and a brand new Xbox Universal Controller. An Xbox Series X refresh is on the way, along with a brand new Xbox Universal Controller. These details emerged in the wake of a major Microsoft FTC leak, internal documents that were accidentally redacted and accidentally released following Microsoft's lengthy court battle with the FTC to finalize Activision Blizzard's settlement.
While this is definitely bad news for Microsoft Gaming, it has given us a lot of information to think about. It's worth remembering that these internal documents detailing the proposed mid-generation refresh of the Xbox console series are dated May 2022, so these plans may have changed in the months since then. Still, given the complexity of launching new hardware in a fluctuating market – rising inflation and ongoing chip shortages – I think it's safe to assume that the broad outlines of this information remain on track.
Below, you'll find everything we know so far about the Xbox Series X refresh, codenamed Brooklin. There is also information about the features of the digital-only console and the new Xbox Universal Controller.
Xbox Series X renewed design
The Xbox Series X refresh design is a subtle change from the original system that launched in 2020. Where the launch console was a rectangular monolith, the all-digital Xbox Series X appears to have a more cylindrical shape. In leaked internal documents, Microsoft calls this a “beautiful and innovative new design” that takes full advantage of the removal of a disk drive. Conceptual images of the revamped console show that the front of the console will feature an Xbox power button, a pairing button for controllers and media devices, and a USB-C port. There's no indication yet whether the refreshed Xbox Series X will be significantly smaller or lighter than the original system.
Xbox Series X renewed price
Leaked internal documents reveal that the Xbox Series X renewal price will be $499 – “the same great price” as the original Xbox Series X. It's unclear what this says about the broader Xbox ecosystem, although there's a chance this could change as Microsoft grapples with shifting forces in the market. The launch could indicate that the price of the XSX model will drop, or that Microsoft will position the two systems at the same price point and let gamers decide whether they want to continue accessing physical media.
Xbox Series X refresh release date rumor
When Microsoft's internal presentation for the Xbox Series X renewal was prepared last year, the platform owner stated that it wanted to launch the console by November 2024. That release date for the all-digital Xbox Series
Xbox Series X renewed features
The renewed Xbox Series X appears to have similar features to the launch Xbox Series X, although there are some significant differences. I want to caution that this information could change given its source, but it seems likely that this all-digital Xbox Series X will be a mid-generation refresh more in line with the Xbox One S rather than the Xbox One X. Microsoft's internal documentation says the new system will "deliver 4K Gen-9 console gaming with more internal storage, faster wi-fi, less power, a more immersive controller, and a beautiful redesign that elevates the all-digital experience of the Xbox ecosystem." .
The new Xbox console is expected to run video games at the same level as the original Xbox Series X, but the revamped system will also include some updated technologies. The most important of these are undoubtedly Wi-Fi 6E support (lower latency on wireless connection), Bluetooth 5.2 (better connection with external devices), 2TB of internal storage (up from the 1TB available at launch of the XSX) and 15% increase in PSU power output Changes made on the component side to achieve a reduction of XNUMX.
There's no word yet on what ports are on the back of the console, but the expectation is that it will continue to support existing peripherals and top Xbox Series X hard drives.
Xbox Series X renewed games
The revamped Xbox Series X is expected to play all the best Xbox Series X games and upcoming Xbox Series The renewed console will be completely digital, meaning it will not accept any physical media such as Blu-Ray, DVD or CD. From what we know so far, Microsoft isn't planning to release an external disc drive add-on for the Xbox Series
Xbox Controller
The renewed Xbox Series X will come with a brand new accessory, the Xbox Universal Controller. Internally codenamed Sebile, this revamped controller will offer a new form and function compared to the peripheral available at launch. While the core ergonomics and layout remain largely unchanged, the Xbox Universal Controller will reportedly be equipped with support for Xbox Wireless 2, Bluetooth 5.2, and Direct-to-Cloud functionality, helping to improve your connectivity and reduce input lag no matter how and where you plan to play.
The Xbox Universal Controller will include a rechargeable and replaceable battery as standard (the original Xbox Series X controller still requires a battery as standard) and will also come with some new design features. While the new modular thumbsticks are said to offer extensive “structure improvements” and “improved longevity,” other major changes are also on the way. Hall Effect Sensor sticks like those found on the GameSir G7 SE weren't specifically mentioned, but greater "longevity" may mean that. Microsoft says the Xbox Universal Controller will feature “precise haptic feedback,” quieter buttons and thumbsticks, and, interestingly, “VCA haptics” that can “double as both an accelerometer and speaker.”
While the Xbox Universal Controller is expected to be available separately, Microsoft's internal road map states that the new controller will be released in May 2024. There's a chance this may have changed, given that the leaked documents are from May 2022, but it's good to know that this refreshed controller is on the near horizon.
