Psyonix's Rocket Racing, one of the new games launched inside Fortnite last week, made waves for the wrong reasons, with cosmetics coming at extra high prices. But that's about to change, because Epic is permanently lowering all Rocket Racing car prices.
The price of rare (green) vehicles will decrease from 2.500 V-Bucks to 1.500 V-Bucks, and the price of rare (blue) vehicles will decrease from 4.000 V-Bucks to 2.500 V-Bucks. The only rare car currently in the store, the Diesel was technically the most expensive major cosmetic you could buy with V-Bucks in the entire game, with 4.000 converting to around $30 or more depending on a few factors. It's worth noting that these cars were cross-bought with Rocket League, so the pricing made more sense for those who also play that game.
Epic says that for those who have purchased one or more of these vehicles, the price difference will be refunded within a week.
It's extremely unusual for Epic to change the V-Bucks price of any cosmetics – this is the first I've heard of this happening. Fortnite currently has lower standard prices than in the early years when skins were offered for 2.000 V-Bucks – Epic now only offers occasional collaboration skins like Goku.
But while Epic has adjusted the cost of purchasing V-Bucks twice since Fortnite's launch in 2017, it has never directly adjusted the prices of these legacy items. Instead, standard practice has been to throw expensive old items into fairly generous new packages, such as the extremely good Alien Abduction package.
Alongside Rocket Racing, the rhythm game Fortnite Festival also launched last weekend with controversial cosmetics such as the 1500-V-Bucks guitar. Epic has not made any statement regarding these price adjustments. In short, Rocket Racing regulates most cosmetic products, including car prices.
