How to set up PS5 parental control? Keep the kids (and your bank balance) safe while playing games on Sony's PlayStation console.
Today's kids become tech-savvy at a very young age, but you might not want your kids to sit in front of the PS5 without some guardrails. Sony has included parental controls in its console's software, and these can be used with the user profiles feature to put limits on what your kids can do.
These limits cover everything from the number of hours your child can spend playing games to how much they can spend on in-game purchases, and it's all tied to the accounts you have configured on your console. Most of these parental controls can be managed on the web as well as on the PS5, but new child accounts must be created over the web.
How to set up family management and PS5 parental control on the web?
First off, you need to tell Sony who your family members are before you start restricting what they can do on the PS5 at home. We assume you already have a PlayStation Network (PSN) account:
- Go to your Account Management page in a web browser.
- Click Family Management > Set Up Now > Add Children.
- You must provide a birth date, an email address, and a password for the child so they can sign in to the PS5.
You will then be shown a number of parental control settings that will be applied to the account, covering which games, VR features, and websites can be accessed on PS5.
- Click Age Level for PS5 games to set a new age level – by default this will be calculated based on the date of birth you provide.
- If you have a VR headset, click PS VR2 & PS VR Usage. When you select Restrict, your child will not be able to use these devices without your permission.
- To prevent games and chats from opening web links without your permission while your child is signed in to PS5, click Web Browsing and then Restrict.
- Select Confirm.
Now you have another set of settings to work on.
Select Communication and User Generated Content and Restrict to block features such as voice chat, sending and receiving messages, and sharing screenshots.
Choose the Monthly Spending Limit to place restrictions on how much your child can spend through the PS5 – amounts range from zero to unlimited, with a range of amounts in between.
- Click Confirm, then set your time zone. You will then be prompted to configure screen time restrictions based on how long and between what hours per day your child can be on the console. Select Confirm, Accept, and Add to Family again and you're done.
For any setting where you select Restrict instead of Restrict, if your child tries to use that feature, a permission request will be sent via email or to the PlayStation mobile app if you have it installed. You can then make a one-time exception if you wish.
You can always return to the Account Management page on the web to change these settings or to see your child's activity on PS5 (for example, how many hours a day they play). You can also access the same parental controls via the console.
Adding child accounts on PS5
Now that Sony knows who's in your family, you can add them to user accounts on your PS5. Your child will be able to sign in to their own account with their own games, high scores and preferences, and with your parental control settings applied.
Sign out of your account by selecting your avatar (top right on the home screen) and then selecting Sign Out. Next, select Add User to allow your child to sign in – they'll be able to set their own username and profile picture along the way.
How does the child account work?
A child account does not have the same privileges as an adult account. If your child opens Settings (using the gear icon in the top right), then Family & Parental Controls, they won't be able to edit these controls – but they can see how much playtime is left for today.
If you want to make changes or tweak the controls, simply go back to your own account on PS5 and open the console settings using the gear icon in the upper right corner of the home screen. From here you can access all the parental controls we covered in the web interface earlier.
- Select Family & Parental Controls > Family Management, then select the child account to make changes.
- Select Change Playtime for Today to give your kids more time on PS5 or see how much time they're already playing.
- Select Allowed Games to see your child's pending requests for blocked games or disallowed communication options (such as voice chat).
- Select Parental Controls to change all the settings you configure on the web, from the monthly spending limit to age range restrictions in games.
It's a good idea to protect your PSN account on PS5 with a PIN – otherwise, your child can log into the console like you and turn off parental controls. To do this, select Users & Accounts > Login Settings > Require PS5 Login Password from the PS5 Settings screen.
