Current 12 Open World Games List! Get an idea about modern games by staying informed about the 12 Best Open World Games! We've compiled a list of 12 great modern open world games available today.
There was a time when video games were largely linear events. You have moved either up or down or left to right in closed spaces. As technology has evolved, so has the scope of digital worlds. Now players are regularly exposed to vast environments filled with quests, interesting characters, and horizons that expand with each console generation. These experiences consume dozens if not hundreds of hours, and as more flood the market, knowing which games are worth your time has become crucial. To that end, we've compiled a list of 12 great modern open-world games available today to help make a crippling decision a little easier. These not listed in any particular order and it doesn't necessarily represent the greatest games of all time. Rather, this will be an ever-changing list of quality games that you'll have to go out of your way to get lost in, and reach for in recent years.
Elden Ring
PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
FromSoftware proves its punishing but satisfying action style RPG definitely works in open world format. Overflowing with mystery and danger, Elden Ring allows players to forge their own path, providing little guidance or hand-holding, making every discovery feel like a truly exciting and well-deserved reward. Unlike traditional Souls games, hitting a tough boss isn't the end of the road. You can explore elsewhere and fall down rabbit holes to dodge an impregnable stronghold, escape a dangerous swamp, or take down dozens of other formidable foes. Quality of life additions like free fast travel and friendlier checkpoints before boss fights reduce some stress, encouraging you to hop on your ghost mount and discover every secret of this incredible world
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC
The gritty fantasy world of The Witcher 3 is as beautiful as it is deadly. Yet, due to its dense population of supernatural monsters, cruel rulers, and (typically) backstabbing citizens, we wouldn't actually want to live in it. The Witcher 3's Continent keeps you on your toes thanks to its choice-oriented gameplay. Small choices often come back hours later in more substantial ways than you might expect, making any cunning thief, strangler, or cowardly knight-designer knight worthy of attention. With a compelling main story, dozens of meaningful side quests, and ships full of treasure, The Witcher 3 and its extraordinary expansions manage to make its massive setting well worth exploring.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Switch, Wii U
What makes Breath of the Wild magical is that it streamlines years of triple-A open-world design. Rather than filling Hyrule with icons that tell you where to go, it allows players to chart their own path. He has only one imperative mission: to destroy Ganon. Since you can do this right away, everything else is optional. Even the biggest games force you to stick to the main linear narrative path. In BOTW, one player's approach to killing Ganon can be completely different from another. Do you complete the four primary dungeons? Looking for Master Sword? Build your heart? The beauty of it all: there are no wrong answers.
Link can climb any surface, so if you have the stamina, you can reach the top of any mountain and invent countless paths to your destination. Hyrule also works on realistic physics and principles that players can experiment with (i.e. all metal objects conduct electricity). Whether it's majestic dragons or an island with more than meets the eye, it has hundreds of temples with concise, fun puzzles and countless mysteries. Breath of the Wild rocks to encourage improvisation and creativity more than anything else. Its legacy is cemented by a growing number of titles borrowed from the playbook, such as Genshin Impact and Immortals Fenyx Rising.
No Man's Sky
PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
open the world? Try the open universe! No Man's Sky allows players to freely explore entire solar systems worth randomly generated planets. Each planet is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you will get. Strange animals, strange plant life, wild weather and valuable resources await your browser. No Man's Sky was released infamously as a solid game that didn't adequately live up to its bigger promises. Since then, the game has made a full 180 with numerous expansions and updates that add base building, true multiplayer, creature taming, real stories, underwater exploration, VR support, among other things – all at no extra cost. No Man's Sky didn't miraculously evolve from a punchline to one of the most content-intensive and beloved games. If you haven't been in your ship's cockpit since 2016, you're in for a pleasant surprise.
Red Dead Redemption II
PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
Few studios create worlds that feel as realistic as Rockstar Games, and Red Dead Redemption 2 may be their greatest achievement. Impeccable details flow from every inch of this wild west, and you feel like you've stepped into a time portal back to the 1800s. Survival elements like cooking, camping, and hunting allow players to effectively role-play as a trail-worn gunslinger – and it's more fun than you might expect. Immediate side quests mean a fascinating story or an unforgettable stranger can pop up out of nowhere, and there's a lot of variety when it comes to strange landscapes you'll encounter by chance. Take on an incredible story led by a highly engaging protagonist of outlaw Arthur Morgan, and Red Dead Redemption 2 competes not only with the best games but also with the classic westerns that inspired it.
Forza Horizon 5
Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One, PC
The biggest trick the Forza Horizon series does is trick players into loving racing games by disguising them as open-world RPGs. The latest entry, Horizon 5, serves as the pinnacle of Trojan Horse-style design. Set in a stunningly beautiful rendition of Mexico, players sit behind hundreds of cars to compete in seemingly endless wild races. Whether you're speeding against other cars or a 747 plane, a wide variety of events and a ton of exaggeration make Horizon more carefree than most pure racing simulations. In addition to traditional races, you can enjoy Horizon 5's fun battle royale, a zombie infection mode, and absurd story-driven scenarios (like parade float rides). An astonishing collection of unlockable cars, purchasable houses to store said vehicles, plus cosmetics and silly dances for your avatar create powerful incentives to win the winner's bag. Best-in-class driving mechanics solidify Horizon 5's top position.
Marvel's Spider-Man
PS5, PS4
Discovering a wonderfully realized replica of Marvel's Big Apple rocks for one reason: it's wobbly. Spider-Man's primary mode of transport is a blast and arguably the most fun mode of transition in any open world game. It might be the one title you never want to fast travel on. For New Yorkers, climbing important places like the Empire State or the Chrysler Building is great. For comic book buffs, it's exciting to see Avengers Tower, Doctor's Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, Jessica Jones' Alias Investigations office, The Bar With No Name, and other recognizable hotspots. Challenges like Harry Osborn's science experiments, catching random street criminals or catching pigeons (yes, pigeons) offer solid fun, as does collecting backpacks filled with fascinating memorabilia documenting Peter Parker's ten-year superhero career.
Ghost of Tsushima
PS5, PS4
According to the title, the samurai saga of Sucker Punch unfolds on the real-life Japanese island of Tsushima during the 1274 Mongol invasion. Warrior Jin Sakai must liberate his home by any means necessary, such as dueling enemies face-to-face or sneaking up on them. from the shadows. The overwhelming beauty of Tsushima is breathtaking. The bountiful fields of flowers, tall grass and bamboo forests dancing in the wind create a sense of living in an idealized version of any samurai movie ever made. Intelligent and nuanced guidance in the form of a summonable wind current guides players in the right direction without breaking the immersion. The game contains numerous side missions, but the most important are narrative segments that follow the exploits of Jin's primary allies. Tracking a fox to a hidden treasure or meditating next to a waterfall to create a haiku captures a quirk and serenity that few games offer.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey
PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, PC
The Assassin's Creed series offers an exciting array of historical destinations: Renaissance Italy, Victorian London and Ptolemaic Egypt, to name a few. If we have to pick one, we start with the jaw-dropping interpretation of the Odyssey of ancient Greece. If you're looking for a game to get completely lost in, Odyssey is brimming with content. Numerous main narrative sequences, countless side quests, castles to conquer, naval battles, legendary animal hunts and much more await the heroine Kassandra/Alexios. Odyssey feels more fun to explore because it embraces being a video game more than any entry and lets you climb almost any surface. It even has the ability to remove fall damage (very long, straw piles). If spending a hundred hours clearing the base game isn't enough, DLC expansions like the fantastic Fate of Atlantis expand this big fat Greek adventure.
Sand
Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One, PC
You don't see many open-world indie games, but Sable offers a refreshingly minimalist, non-violent approach to navigating the vast terrain. As Sable, you embark on a ritual journey to find your purpose in life. As you cruise through a stunning desert in your Speeder-like glider, you'll visit towering landmarks and isolated villages to collect masks that symbolize your destiny. Doing so involves helping as many or as few people as you see fit. Like Breath of the Wild, Sable is all about carving your own path with no primary mission to complete. If you want to collect all available masks, you can. If you just find one and decide "this is what I need to be", that's fine too. Sable's colorful cast of characters reflects her personality, despite her lack of voice. and the fascinating cultures and cutting-edge technology hidden among the dunes make every discovery feel like an event. Backed by the wonderful ambient music of Japanese Breakfast, Sable is an unforgettable journey into adulthood.
Horizon Zero Dawn
playstation 4, pc
Horizon Zero Dawn's post-apocalyptic United States acts as a giant mystery. Modern humanity fell centuries ago, but humanity persists in small, tribal societies. All that remains of ancient civilization are sentient, robotic animals that inhabit the land as naturally as any living creature. As Warrior Aloy, revealing the truth behind humanity's downfall, the origin of these mechanical beasts and your connection to it, fortunately, serve as effective hooks that keep the descent down to the end. The robots themselves act as the main attraction, offering fun battles that strategically force players to dismantle them piece by piece. Horizon Zero Dawn is also a technical powerhouse. The game is beautiful, and the juxtaposition of futuristic and primitive aesthetics makes it stand out among a crowded sea of similarly designed titles. While the game's mission design won't surprise open-world veterans, there are few settings on its predecessors that are as compelling as Aloy's.
